Common questions

Does writing about your partner actually improve your relationship?
No study we cite tested that. What is documented is broader: in a 2003 experiment by Emmons and McCullough, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, people who spent a few minutes each week listing what they were grateful for reported more optimism and higher life satisfaction than people who listed hassles instead. Whether daily appreciation changes one specific relationship is not something a journal can promise.
What should I write about my partner each day?
Write moments, not qualities. “She is supportive” is a category, and categories are forgettable. “She made me chai without being asked” is a moment — it has a picture attached, and it will still mean something in a year. Three specific lines are enough. Being able to recognise the moment a year from now matters more than how important it sounds.
We’re in a rough patch. Isn’t this just ignoring the problems?
No. Unpleasant events hit harder and stay longer than pleasant events of the same size — that is negativity bias, not a verdict on your relationship. Writing three things you appreciate does not unhappen an argument. It puts a second entry in a competition that otherwise runs unopposed. Things that need saying out loud still need saying out loud.
